Networking

Meeting people is not a personality. It is a way of letting the right rooms find out what you actually do.

Stop collecting cards

The word 'networking' has been ruined by rooms full of people performing usefulness at each other. If that is what you hate, you are not broken. You are reacting to a bad format.

The useful version is smaller. You need a handful of people who have seen you work, and a way for new rooms to find out what you bring without you having to sell it cold. That is it. Volume is not the point.

Your portrait changes the format

People with a Bold way often do fine in a loud room and then wonder why nothing stuck — they met thirty people and none of them saw the work. People with a Deep or Flint way often refuse the room entirely, and then wonder why opportunities only arrive through existing friends.

Match the format to the way you actually move. If you think in writing, send a useful note after a talk, not a handshake in the foyer. If you come alive in a small group, volunteer to run a working session, not work the drinks. If your Motive is Companion or Protector, introductions you make for other people will do more for you than introductions you ask for.

The Size of world that feels like home matters too. A Valley person does not need a national conference. A Horizon person will wither if the only network is the same six colleagues. Neither is wrong. The cost of the mismatch is real.

One useful ask

When you do ask, ask for a specific kind of seeing, not a job. 'I'm trying to understand how X actually works in your world — could I have twenty minutes?' is a real request. 'Let me know if you hear of anything' is a wish you have handed to someone else.

After the conversation, send back one thing you heard, in their words. That is the whole loop. People remember being heard more than they remember being impressed.
